Why choose radiators for your new home?

For newlyweds one of the most exciting things to look forward to is moving into a new home together, choosing the furniture and colour schemes and making it a perfect home in which to start married life in. Living in a country like the United Kingdom, some form of heating will need to be decided on as well. Radiators, in conjunction with a gas-fired boiler, are a popular solution for a number of reasons. Firstly, gas is a very efficient fuel and modern boilers are designed to get the most out of it - condensing boilers have to be at least 86% efficient, which they achieve by using the hot flue gases to help heat water, which in older boilers are simply released into the air outside. This is the hot water which is then distributed to the radiators situated around your home. Secondly, gas can be supplied directly to your home, in the same way as electricity is available on demand, so there is no need to store any fuel on your property, as you would have to for solid fuel burners. Thirdly, as gas is so popular in the UK, it is easy to find qualified engineers to install new appliances and perform maintenance on existing ones. If your new house is not connected to the gas network then you could consider electric radiators as an alternative solution, as getting connected can be an expensive and time consuming operation. These are also useful for places where there is no space for extra plumbing.

Running out of steam

There are two main types of gas central heating systems: those that use hot water to distribute heat around the house and those that use steam. Although it is possible to convert hot water radiators to be used in a steam system, it is better to buy the right type in the first place, if you are starting from scratch. Nowadays the vast majority of gas central heating systems use hot water rather than steam, so most manufacturers concentrate on producing for these, meaning you should have an easy task finding appliances for your home. There are many different styles on the market, from the traditional single and double panel types to modern feature radiators, which can look more like a piece of modern art than a heating appliance. You can even find designs in the shape of an abacus, with glow in the dark globes! Among the more conventional offerings are low level units that can be installed flush with the floor, for an unobtrusive heating solution, and classic multicolumn designs. Tubular radiators are a nice variation on the column style design and look good in newer houses. If you are planning on inviting friends around to your house to show them your wedding video then they will appreciate the even temperature that a central heating system provides and will be able to enjoy watching the video without being distracted by being too hot or too cold. Available on DVDs, you can always give them a copy to take home with them as a gift.

Cold winter nights

There is nothing better after coming in from the cold streets in the wintertime, than to have a nice hot bath and relax in the warmth and comfort of your home. Central heating distributes heat around your entire home and so ensures that you are comfortable in any room in the house. You can fix radiators of various sizes in each room and either control them from a central thermostat or individually, depending on your preference. After the excitement of your wedding day and honeymoon, your first winter together can be quite hard, as you both come back to reality with a bump. A video of your special day is great to look back on and can remind you of what you both have together. After your bath you can dry yourself off with a warm towel from the heated towel rails and settle down in front of the television to relive all the fun and laughter. You can have DVDs made up of your wedding video so it is easy to send to relatives who maybe could not make it on the day, or who, like you, would enjoy the opportunity to see it all again. It is also a chance to see the parts that as the bride and groom, you did not have a chance to see on the day, because you were too busy at the time. Turn the radiators up and the lights down and sit back and enjoy.

Keeping it going

As newlyweds, your love with be enough to see you through the coldest of winters and hopefully your central heating will be enough to keep you warm while you do it. There are some simple things you can do to increase the efficiency of the radiators around your house, that will not cost a lot of money. The cheapest and most effective can be to place aluminium foil against the wall behind them , especially those that are situated on external walls. You should always make sure to store your wedding video DVDs well away from any of your heating appliances as they can be damaged by exposure to sources of direct heat and begin to warp or even melt. Cast iron radiators are a great choice as the iron retains and spreads heat in the most efficient manner. Fitting a thermostatic regulator valve to each appliance is more efficient than using a central one too, as they will turn off as each room reaches the required temperature then, rather than depending on the temperature of the room where the main thermostat is. This is more convenient for most people too, as they prefer rooms like the sitting room to be warmer than the kitchen, and the bathroom to be the warmest room of all. If you find that any of your radiators are not uniformly warm and have cold spots then you may need to bleed them, which is a simple task for most models.
